Summer in the city

Sometimes there is nothing worse than summertime in the city – the heat, the sweat, the filth and exhaust. Ugh!
But sometimes there is nothing better because the culture of the city spills outdoors, and the days offer a never-ending assortment of impromptu surprises. I came out of the subway at Union Square last evening to sunshine, a light breeze that promised a cool evening – and a deep bass riff.
Anchoring the south end of the park was a stage and an outdoor concert, sponsored in part by the NYC Parks Department. Pedestrians, commuters, and park haunts milled about lazily, and nearby old men played chess and young men hocked bright wooden jewelry on the steps. An event indeed, and one of those classic moments here when you fall totally and stupidly in love with the city all over again.
Apropos of that? The best summer anthem from 1966, and an homage to dear Chief Rabbit (she knows who she is) – I present the Lovin’ Spoonful in all their live glory…
