I just received a birthday party evite and I was thrilled with one element: “Please no presents, but you are welcome to bring food or drink. If so, please post what you are bringing along with your response.“
Great idea!
Hosts who ask guests to bring food or beverage without clarifying what each guest should bring are doing a disservice to themselves and their visitors. Only at a traditional pot luck are attendees told to bring an item representing a master category – appetizer, salad, side dish, entree, dessert, etc. An amorphous “you are welcome to bring something!” in a party invite is a death knell, ensuring a buffet with duplicates or 800 kinds of dip and no entrees.
This friend’s solution was simple and perfect, guaranteeing a wonderful array of food and drink options. Brilliant.
