We are all human. When entertaining, it is a necessary grace to offer an air freshener or room spray in your bathroom, in plain sight (you don’t want a frantic guest digging in your vanity or medicine cabinet).
Aerosol sprays are utilitarian, loud, and not beautiful. On the contrary, Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day makes wonderful room sprays, as does L’Occitane and my aunt’s perennial favorite, Crabtree & Evelyn. There are many other options out there, but remember: whatever you choose, the spray should be very light in both scent and weight.
To make your own eco-friendly room spray, add nine drops of an essential oil of your choice to two and a half cups of water, and store in a simple spray bottle like this one.
If you hate sprays, or just really value discretion, take a tip from my mother and light a subtly scented candle in the bathroom before guests arrive. My personal favorite is Mexican Cocoa from Pacifica, but Tocca, Diptyque, and Votivo also make wonderful, delicately-scented candles. They are pricey, but it is worth spending a little money as these candles last a long time and burn cleanly.
Less expensive scented candles are typically more pungent; if you go this route consider the tealight or votive option in lieu of a large jar or pillar.
The clean air initiative makes an excellent point. Many people spend countless hours and money on creating a beautiful home to enjoy and entertain in. However, the fragrance is a powerful accessory and should not be forgotten. Think about it. Haven’t you ever smelled a scent and either been taken back to a pleasant memory or a memory you would rather forget? Scents evoke strong memories, moods and set an ambiance. So what is your home saying? You may remember to scent your body and bath, but don’t leave your home out. Essential oils can be mixed to easily create the right personality and statement for your home. You can control the combination and the strength.
